Sponging Up Plastic Pollution

Snuggles. Do they have any limitations? Dried natural sponges have been utilised by humans for thousands of years for a variety of purposes, including painting, cleaning, and even as contraceptive devices. Sponge material, whether natural or manufactured, excels at capturing minute particles within their numerous pores. Furthermore, as researchers from all over the world are starting to demonstrate, sponges’ cavity-filled morphologies suggest that they may be able to address one of the largest problems of our time: microplastic contamination.

A report detailing the invention of a synthetic sponge that quickly removes tiny plastic trash was released in August by researchers in China. In experiments, the researchers demonstrate that their sponges can remove both microplastics and even smaller nanoplastics from a specially produced plastic-filled fluid. Usually, the many pores in the sponge catch these particles. Read more-
